EXHIBITION: Image & Identity: views from Ceylon and Oxfordshire in early colonial photographs

exhibition poster image and identity

This exhibition showcases early colonial photographs from Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka) from the University of Oxford's Pitt Rivers Photographic collection, alongside photographs of Oxfordshire (from the Underhill Collection, held by MOX).  Curated by Shalini Amerasinghe Ganendra, the exhibition aims to build awareness of the fluidity of visual perspectives, using colonial period photography as a springboard for contemporary discussions and explorations of identity.  Images of contemporary works by Sri Lankan artist Sujeewa Kumari extend the theme of links between image, impression, and time, inviting viewers to consider how they see these photographed people and places today.

Please see more information on the Museum of Oxford site, including how and when to visit the museum.
