I am a senior lecturer at Oxford Brookes University in the department of History, Philosophy and Culture. My research focuses on present histories of the English language in academic discourse and the cultural production and reproduction of the language of objectivity as ‘English’. In both contexts, academic discourse is construed as complicit in projects of colonisation.
Also, along with other locals from Florence Park where I live, I am involved in a Decolonising Street Names OxEmp project. In its early stages, the project is preparing Community Boards which contrast the local history of the area with the brutal histories of the men behind some of the street names. The aim is to raise awareness about such histories rather than change the street names.
